For Barco, caring for others is the beating heart behind everything we do. It’s the reason we’ve been making high-quality apparel for healthcare professionals for 90+ years. It’s the reason that Kenneth Donner, who took the reins at Barco in 1936, pioneered the use of nylon in professional uniforms. Because making the job easier for those who care for others is why we’re here.

A LEGACY OF INNOVATION
Process
Barco’s designers and pattern makers in Los Angeles create each garment. Prototypes are cut and sewn, and then tested by real healthcare professionals who provide feedback before the models go into production. All of this attention to detail is meant to ensure that our garments are always of the highest quality. It’s part of our mission to make your job a little bit easier.
Since the beginning, Barco has been committed to innovation, using fabric technologies and tailoring techniques to create uniforms that are beautifully designed, easy to care for and made to last.
Pioneers
Barco’s pioneering use of nylon meant that uniforms were easy to care for and didn’t need to be ironed, saving hard-working nurses time and energy. Barco was the first company to create pant suits, offering an alternative to the traditional nurse’s dress and inventing the modern medical scrub set, which is still what healthcare professionals wear today.
Later, Barco was the first professional apparel company to offer tops and bottoms – for men and women – sold separately to accommodate a range of sizes and flatter any shape. Fashion scrubs with print tops were another Barco innovation that are still popular today.
A Commitment to Care
In 2008, Michael Donner, Barco’s Chairman of the Board, and his wife Frida founded the Barco's Nightingales Foundation (BNF). Created to honor his father’s legacy and inspired by the life-saving and life-changing work that healthcare professionals do every day, BNF provides services to children around the world.
Among its many projects, it has initiated a food program serving 6,000 families living in remote villages in Haiti. Due to COVID-19, a dedicated Barco team in Haiti hand delivers the monthly meal packages that have supplied over 5 million meals in the past year. In addition, it has built 7 solar water wells to supply safe drinking water in these villages.
COVID-19 presented the healthcare industry, and the world, with the most difficult challenge of our lifetime. Barco stepped up, providing frontline healthcare professionals and essential workers with over 35,000 scrubs. BNF contributed an additional 350,000 masks to 6 local hospitals in California. It’s all part of our belief that caring takes care of everything.

Caring for others comes with a responsibility to care for the planet we all love and share. Inspired by our commitment to a more sustainable future, Barco has created fabrics that use recycled plastic bottles and have the same high-quality hand feel and reliable performance of our other Barco fabrics. You’ll find recycled materials in the fabric of our Barco One® and Skechers™ by Barco lines. We’ve recycled 40 million plastic bottles since 2016, and we’re just getting started.
